Misc Initial NextStep Thoughts #1

September 10, 2022

One thing I've noticed with my time in NextStep so far is that the mouse just has non-linear acceleration enabled by default. Using it with a touchpad mouse is horrible. You can go the settings program and adjust the mouse to the lowest level and that enables linear movement mode but the mouse will have jumpy movement if you move horizontally too quickly. I think this is caused by the OS not having a native linear movement mode and the hack fix is to do some math subtracting the acceleration values. I remember OS/2 doing something similar. It is less noticable on a normal optical mouse than it is when using a trackpad mouse though.

I would say that this is an 86Box problem but I've also used another emulator which is based off of the same codebase as WinUAE, an emulator designed specifically for NextStep's Motorolo 680xx versions called Previous (get it? previous!), and this emulator still had the same mouse weirdness.
